Mailman caught with trove of suspected stolen mail

A Long Island mailman has been making special deliveries — tohis backyard shed.

The letter-carrier, who lives in Bellmore and has a route inBethpage, was found Tuesday with more than 60 jumbo black garbagebags stuffed with what authorities suspect is undelivered mail,officials and witnesses said.

 

Inspectors from the US Postal Service descended on the suspectedrogue postman』s home and hauled off the bags from his shed.

The shed is just a few feet from the windows of the localfirehouse — and its members said they have been watching the30-something mailman lugging the bags to the structure over thepast eight months, according to ABC 7.

Letters addressed to locations in Bethpage could be seenspilling out from one garbage bag that had been split open duringthe seizure Tuesday.

The US Postal Service Office of the Inspector General confirmedto The Post that it is investigating the situation but added thatno arrests or charges have been filed.

「The agents are still reviewing the items, and we』re going towork with state and federal prosecutors to determine if there willbe any charges filed,」 said spokesman Matt Modafferi.

「Each person who』s done this has their own specific reasons asto why they』ve done this in the past. In this case, right now, wedon』t have any comment as to why this was done,」 he said.
